In this intimate conversation, acclaimed authors Anne Freeman and Kylie Orr come together to explore the 2026 IWD theme “Balance the Scales”
Stories have always been one of the most powerful ways women make sense of the world, and of themselves.
In this intimate International Women’s Day conversation, acclaimed authors Anne Freeman and Kylie Orr come together to explore the 2026 IWD theme “Balance the Scales” through the lens of fiction, identity, power, and personal agency.
Both writers are known for their unflinching, emotionally rich storytelling — narratives that delve beneath the surface of ordinary lives to reveal the private reckonings, quiet rebellions, and difficult choices women make every day. From online identity and sexual autonomy to motherhood, secrecy, desire, and self-preservation, their work examines what happens when women step outside expectations and claim space for themselves.
Drawing on Anne’s Me That You See, alongside Kylie’s The Eleventh Floor, this conversation will explore:
How women’s stories challenge cultural norms
The emotional labour women carry, often invisibly
The cost of silence and the power of speaking
Why complexity in women characters still matters
How fiction can illuminate truths we struggle to articulate
Honest, sharp, and darkly funny, this discussion invites audiences to reflect on what it really means to “balance the scales”, in our lives, relationships, and the stories we tell.
